Exams, Vaccinations & Wellness

veterinarian doing a wellness exam in Etobicoke, ON

Annual wellness exams at our Etobicoke Animal Hospital can help keep your dog or cat healthy by catching diseases, illnesses and parasitic infestations early. Illnesses that are caught early are more easily treated, and your pet is more likely to make a full recovery.

What to Expect During Your Pet's Exam

Our Etobicoke veterinarian will check your pet's mouth, eyes, ears nose and neck, looking for abnormalities or parasites, like earmites. We will look for abnormalities and signs of fleas or ticks on your pet's skin and fur. His or her nails will be checked for length and health. Our veterinarian will listen to your pet's heart and lungs and take your pet's temperature. Our vet will look for signs of pain or joint problems in your pet's legs, and your pet's tail and hind end will be examined.

Diagnostic Tests We Offer

Wellness for Puppies & Kittens

In their first year of life, kittens and puppies require a lot of care and attention. They need regular checkups and vaccines in order to make sure they are grow and develop properly, as well as to reduce certain health risks and diseases, like rabies, parvo and distemper. That's why we offer customized pet wellness plans for all growing puppies and kittens in Etobicoke.

A puppy and kitten wellness care package can help you manage your new puppy or kitten’s health – from scheduling the appropriate vaccinations such as rabies, distemper, and parvo, to preventing future disease and illness through comprehensive diagnostic testing. Our care package provides you with preventative wellness services your pet needs, at a cost you can afford.

At your puppy or kitten’s first exam, our Etobicoke vet will perform a full physical examination to evaluate your pet’s current health status. Depending on your puppy or kitten’s specific needs, we will develop the proper course of vaccines and other treatments needed to ensure a healthier, longer life. Overall, our veterinary clinic in Etobicoke will create the right wellness care plan that fits your pet’s lifestyle.

Why Do Puppies & Kittens Require Vaccines?

A kitten or puppy that is nursing will receive maternal antibodies passed through its mother's milk. These maternal antibodies will protect your pet from disease during its first few months, gradually declining in efficacy over time.

After that, vaccinations protect against common diseases and conditions, such as contagious, airborne viruses, and rabies, amongst other illnesses. To help ensure a healthy beginning, our Etobicoke veterinary clinic is here for you and your furry friend.

Wellness for Adult & Senior Pets

If your pet is a senior, we may recommend exams every six months. Cats are typically considered seniors when they reach 10 years of age, and it is no longer rare to hear of cats that reach the age of 20.

Dogs are considered seniors between the ages of six and 10. Generally larger dogs become seniors before smaller dogs.

Once your pet becomes a senior, they are at increased risk for certain ailments, including arthritis and kidney and liver problems. Older pets can even develop diabetes. For these reasons, we may recommend scheduling wellness exams twice a year. This allows our veterinarian to diagnose problems quickly so that your pet can continue to live a happy, active life.

Vaccinations with our Veterinarians in Etobicoke

Dogs and cats should be vaccinated regularly at our Etobicoke animal hospital to prevent serious illnesses. Every dog should receive a rabies vaccination, distemper, parvo and hepatitis. If your dog is frequently boarded or around other dogs, we may recommend additional vaccinations. These include bordetella, parainfluenza and adenovirus. For dogs that are primarily outside, you may want to consider Lyme disease and leptospirosis vaccines.

All cats should receive vaccinations against rabies, feline herpes and panleukopenia. If your cat is frequently around other cats, an outdoor cat or deemed high risk, we may also recommend vaccinations against feline leukemia, FIV and bordetella.

Microchipping

In addition to puppy and kitten wellness packages, we also offer microchipping.  A microchip can help identify your pet in the event he or she escapes your home or car and gets lost.  Microchips are inserted under your pet’s skin between their shoulder blades.

The chip contains your pet’s unique identification number.  When your pet is found, the shelter, veterinarian or rescue scans your pet’s chip and from there will call the customer service center and provide the location of your dog or cat.  The service center then calls you to let you know your pet has been found.

Spay and Neuter

Depending on your pet’s age, he or she may be eligible to undergo a spay or neuter procedure. We strongly recommend spaying or neutering as part of your pet's lifelong health and wellness plan.   Sterilizing your pet can prevent certain illnesses and unwanted behaviors, like the desire to spray and roam away from your home in search of a mate. Before spaying or neutering your animal, our Etobicoke veterinarian can answer any questions you may have of the procedure. At Richview Animal Hospital, we do our best to tailor every procedure to safely meet your pet's individual's needs.
